Local produce

  • Brittany: Where better to indulge in Moules-Frites than Le Bistro à Moules in Hillion. Mussels are served 11 different ways with a generous serving of home-made chips.
  • Dordogne Valley: An array of food celebrations are held in Dordogne such as the ‘Strawberry Fair’ in Beaulieu sur Dordogne and the ‘Prune Fair’ in Carennac…
  • Limousin: Top quality producers and the art of fine dining, tradition, quality and good taste can be found in farmers’ markets, inns and Michelin starred restaurants.
  • Poitou Charentes: On the last Saturday of July, a big floating market is held with over 50 local producers selling their wares along the canals of the magical Marais Poitevin. Nearly 15,000 people attended the market last year.
  • Rhone-Alpes: Mushroom weekend in Vercors: one day spent picking mushrooms with a guide, picnicking in the forest, preparing the mushrooms and finishing with a great meal.
  • Var: lots of famous local produce to taste such as olive , labeled figs from Sollies, truffles, chesnuts from the Maures forest , gingerbread, aromatic honeys and ‘Provence Wines’, red, white and rose.
  • Vendee: On February 2011, the Vendee wines - Brem, Mareuil, Pissotte, Vix and Chantonnay - have received the national AOC label, marketed under the “Fiefs Vendéens” label.

  • Languedoc Roussillon: Food, staff and atmosphere all at the highest standard at the 1 Michelin starred ‘Auberge of Le Vieux Puits’ in Fonjoucouse.
  • Midi Pyrenées: Array of Michelin starred restaurants in Midi-Pyrenées, ambassadors of the South West gastronomy: F Michel Sarran** in Toulouse, Michel Bras*** in Aveyron, Bernard Bach** in Gers…
  • Nord Pas de Calais: ‘Bienvenue chez Nous’ in the lovely town of Bergues is a fantastic restaurant serving some great wines.
  • Ile de Ré: Set in a typical oyster farm, La Cabane du Fier provides a terrace with breathtaking views and market and sea products, grilled over a wood fire.
  • Savoie Mont Blanc: The Hotel-Restaurant Le Montenvers has a superb location overhanging the Mer de Glace and can only be accessed with the Petit Train du Montenvers.
  • Riviera: 2 newly Michelin Star awarded "Mon Rêve de Gosse" with Ludovic Ordas and "Park 45" with Sebastien Broda will let you discover the Mediterranean gourmet’s delight with a glass of wonderful wine of St Honorat island, owned and made by Cistercian monks.
  • Nantes 2012: wine tasting at the Loire Valley Wine Centre, and having dinner or lunch in La Cigale 1900 French brasserie. Stunning décor of this listed restaurant.

Culinary schools

  • Auvergne: Cooking classes available at the Michelin starred Regis Marcon restaurant.
  • Burgundy: Cooking lessons are available at the 3 Michelin stars ‘La Côte St Jacques’ restaurant, whether you choose a course lasting a few hours, an entire weekend, or several weekdays.
  • Marseilles: Miramar – restaurant and cooking classes organised by the Tourist Office and Convention Bureau in partnership with the Miramar restaurant. Chef Christian Buffa will reveal his secret recipe for this unique Marseille specialty each third thursday of the month.

  • Corsica: The Fesch Museum in Ajaccio is a place not to be missed.
  • Languedoc Roussillon: The “Modern Art Museum’ of Ceret has works by some major artists such as Chagall, Dali and Picasso. Contemporary art by Ben and Arman….
  • Midi-Pyrenées: In Figeac, the birth house of Jean-François Champollion, who deciphered hieroglyphs, houses a museum dedicated to the Writings of the World.
  • Nord Pas de Calais: The new Louvre Museum extension in Lens gets ready to open its doors and promises 900 works for its inauguration in 2012.
  • Normandy: Alençon is the only place that still produces needlework lace. 1cm² of lace takes around 7hours to complete! The ‘Lace Museum’ provides a wonderful insight into this unique art. 
  • Riviera: The ‘Bonnard Museum’ in Le Cannet is now the first institution entirely dedicated to the artist with a garden and 350m2 exhibition space.

Castles

  • Clos Luce: a new exhibition: "Léonard de Vinci and France" will explore ten years of the fascinating relationship between three kings of France and the Tuscan Master.
  • Burgundy: The newly renovated ‘Château d'Ancy-le-Franc’ has the largest number of mural paintings dating back to the Renaissance. Guided tours, concerts, cooking classes and wine tasting are available.
  • Savoie Mont Blanc: The Castle of Ripaille is a private castle in a beautiful vineyard set on the shore of lake Geneva. Guided tours and tastings are available all year long.

Historic events and people

  • Auvergne: Seven sites in Auvergne have been awarded the ‘Sites of Artistic and Historic Heritage’ label in recognition of their efforts to highlight and preserve their remarkable heritage.
  • Brittany: The 1100 Carnac’s standing stones are world famous. Predating both our own Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, they need to be seen to be believed.
  • Dordogne valley: Array of Dordogne villages officially designated ‘most beautiful villages’ in France: Collonges-la-Rouge, Turenne, Curemonte, Autoire , Loubressac, Carennac.
  • Limousin: Romanesque churches, abbeys, historical routes, some of “France’s prettiest villages” are only some example of what the rich heritage the region has to offer.
  • Poitou Charentes: A splendid 18th century ship, L’Hermione, is being meticulously recreated in Rochefort and visitors can see the impressive work in progress.
  • Ile de Ré: The well-preserved fortress of Saint Martin is part of Vauban’s major site. One of the largest defensive buildings of this time built in 1681.
  • Rhône-Alpes: 20 "villages de caractère" invite visitors to share their traditions and their way of life.
  • Var : Defintely worth a visit, the Thoronnet Abbey dating from the 12th century, the basilica of Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume , and the Marie Madeleine’s grotto

  • Auvergne: Vichy is the benchmark of spa towns with 3 acclaimed spas and also the place to go for sports and fitness with an multi-sport centre, aquatic centre, two 18-hole golf courses and so much more.

  • Burgundy: Discover the 100s years old oak trees of the famous Bertrange forest in La Charité sur Loire with e-bikes to be rented from the tourism office.
  • Nord Pas de Calais: Major bird-watching sites can be found a stone's throw from Calais, at the Platier d'Oie on the seashore and in the marshes near St Omer.
  • Poitou Charentes: The Maraisthon is an eco-friendly marathon held in the Marais Poitevin, the first sporting event entirely based around sustainable development and ecology in France.
  • Ile de Ré: Located on one of the major European migration routes, the natural reserve Lilleau de Niges is a paradise for birds and ornithologists.
  • Rhône - Alpes: The Green Way is a completely safe 32km route in the Eyrieux valley, a great occasion for ramblers to discover the countryside, the many works of art, and to understand the agricultural and industrial past of the valley.

Outdoor activities

  • Auvergne: Auvergne has been attracting bikers for years. A set of road-books has been published by and for bikers: 1,100 km driven over 4 to 7 days, downloadable free of charge.
  • Brittany: The spectacular Rospico gardens near Pont-Aven have been designed as one big floral tapestry and spread over 3.5 hectares of gentle valleys.
  • Dordogne Valley: Descending the river aboard a canoe on some of the 120km route from Argentat to Beynac to experience the beautiful ever changing scenery.
  • Languedoc Roussillon: Hiking in the Cathars’ country is the best way to discover the various castles steeped in history, centre of the Inquisition.
  • Midi - Pyrenées: ‘Montauban L'Estang Golf’ will open in May 2012 and will be among the longest courses in France with an array of water obstacles.
  • Savoie Mont Blanc: Savoie Mont Blanc has developed many cycling track along the lakes (Annecy, Bourget) and in the vineyards. E-bikes are available at train stations.
  • Riviera: In the lower Vésubie valley, the shrine of the Sanctuaire de la Madone d’Utelle and its restaurant are two of the best known places in the Alpes-Maritimes.
  • Clos Luce: Leonardo’s garden: an open-air museum on the subject of Nature that brings to life the Master’s botanical drawings, geological studies and landscapes.

  • Savoie Mont Blanc: Boat cruise on Lake Geneva, Lake Bourget and Lake Annecy are all available.

Seaside

  • Nord Pas de Calais: Cod-fishing in Icelandic waters was for a long time one of the main activities of Gravelines' seafarers. It is now possible to set sail with the fishermen for a morning or afternoon trip.
  • Var: Over 400 kilometres of shores and 230 beaches and coves bordering the Med, excellent facilities, including access for the disabled, some beaches are naturist and most are wild...
  • Marseilles: Right in the heart of the "Vieux-Port"of Marseille, in front of the City hall and under the protection of the "Bonne Mère", embark aboard the old sailing ship Marseillois for an immovable cruise of the most magic.

  • Normandy: Garden enthusiasts flock to ‘Presqu’île en Fleurs’, a botanical festival to meet producers and discuss the rare collections of plants from the four corners of the world turn from the mountain pastures’ is a traditional folk festival that includes crafts events and a procession of animals returning from the mountain pastures.
  • Rhône-Alpes: Many events and exhibitions are planned in Chambéry and the Rhône-Alpes region to commemorate the 300th anniversary Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s birth.
  • Savoie Mont Blanc: ‘Return from the mountain pastures’ is a traditional folk festival that includes crafts events and a procession of animals returning from the mountain pastures.
  • Clos Luce: LEONARDO DA VINCI, ENGINEER- The fifty models built from Leonardo da Vinci's designs illustrate his different engineering talents in aeronautics, industrial machinery, marine engineering, measuring inst ruments, mechanisms, civil engineering, architecture and military engineering.
  • Nantes 2012: A journey to Nantes, from 15 June to 19 August, ‘Rendez-Vous de l'Erdre’ and Scopitone festival.

Sports

  • Burgundy: Les Coupes Moto Légende is one of the biggest annual gatherings of motorbikes in Europe. 80 participants ride over 130km to enjoy the beautiful roads of Burgundy at the end of May. 
  • Vendée: Classic beauties at Noirmoutier - in August the ‘Bois de la Chaise’ regatta draws almost 150 sleek wooden racing yachts for three days of sailing events in the Bay of Bourgneuf.

Music

  • Auvergne: Every year, the sacred festival ‘La Chaise Dieu’ attracts some 25,000 music lovers who enjoy a heady mix of styles performed in a sublime setting.
  • Brittany: Jazz à Vannes takes over the medieval town of Vannes in southern Brittany with smooth sounds and easy beats in Brittany’s biggest jazz festival.
  • Languedoc Roussillon: “Musique en Monuments’ are free one-hour concerts of major classical and contemporary works, held once a month on a Saturday.
  • Limousin: Vocal concerts in chapels, Romanesque abbeys and gardens in and around Guéret during the ‘Voix d’été en Creuse’ festival.
  • Midi - Pyrenées: Every August for two weeks, 170,000 visitors come to Marciac to celebrate with the biggest jazz stars (Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater) during its Jazz Festival.
  • Ile de Ré: "Ré Majeur" allows the more pleased to participate in the opera and chamber music interpreted in an extraordinary level.
  • Marseilles: 5 CONTINENTS JAZZ FESTIVAL - End of July. The festival places great emphasis on young talent by providing an opening free evening just a short distance from the Old Port... Then at the Palais du Pharo in the gardens of Palais Longchamp some outstanding artists can be listened to.
  • Club French Heritage & Culture: France Festivals is an organisation managing 88 festivals among the most famous in every region of France all the year long.

Sports

  • Savoie Mont Blanc: A unique way to enjoy stunning views on the mountains with hot air balloons rides in Praz sur Arly, Les Carroz d'Araches or Les Saisies villages.
  • Riviera: Visitors are bound to be less than half an hour from a golf course on the Riviera. All aesthetically and technically perfect, and all in outstanding surroundings.

Cultural

  • Auvergne: This ‘National centre for stage costume and stage design’ has a unique collection on display in a beautiful building of the Villars district of Moulins.
  • Languedoc Roussillon:Created in 1994, the 220 ha ‘Regional Natural Reserve du Scamandre’ area protects typical natural habitats of Camargue (reedbeds, riparian woods, open marshes ...). 171 species have been recorded here.
  • Midi - Pyrenées: Gloves from Millau, combining style and finesse, are the result of the tanning and glove-making industries which have existed here since the 12th century.
